Prepare for Winter Emergencies

Stormy WinterAs stormy months have begun to show their menacing clouds, it’s important now to  prepare for potential emergencies that can, and do, arise.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Ready Campaign is a great resource for everyone looking to be prepared for emergencies. The Ready Campaign’s message is simple: get a kit, make a plan and be informed.

An emergency kit is a simple and effective way to be prepared for whatever disaster may come your way. A kit can be made with basic household items such as: food, water, battery-powered radio, batteries, flashlight, first aid kit, dust mask, whistle, towelettes, simple tools, and local maps. Other items can be included depending on your level of preparedness. Visit http://www.ready.gov/america/getakit/index.html for more information.

The second tip is to make a family emergency action plan that outlines what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency. Also, an emergency out-of-town contact should be established and every family member should know the phone number of the contact and have a means to call.

The third part of this program is to be informed about any potential emergencies or disasters that can occur where you live and to know the appropriate response.
